CARE & LONGEVITY
How to Care for my Raffia?
Raffia is a natural fibre and should be treated with gentle care. Keep your piece away from prolonged exposure to water and store it in a cool, dry place when not in use. If your piece gets lightly damp, allow it to dry naturally away from direct heat or sunlight.
How do I clean my TANORA piece?
Raffia is naturally water-resistant, meaning it can be gently hand-washed without compromising the integrity of the fibre. Use a mild, natural detergent and rinse thoroughly under clean water. Always reshape your piece by hand after washing and allow it to air-dry fully before storing. Avoid chemical cleaners of any kind, as these can stain the raffia and cause discolouration.
Can I get the Raffia wet?
Yes — raffia is naturally water-resistant and can handle exposure to water without affecting the fibre. Simply allow your piece to air-dry completely before wearing or storing, in a well-ventilated area away from direct heat or sunlight. Never store your piece while still damp.
What if my piece loses its shape?
Raffia is a forgiving material. If your piece becomes misshapen, try gently reshaping it by hand while slightly damp, then allow it to dry naturally in the correct form.
Can my raffia hat be packed for travel?
Yes — many of our hats are designed with travel in mind. Our round crown styles such as the Beloa, and Satroka can be rolled or folded and will return to their shape once worn. For our fedora styles, we recommend protecting the V-shape by stuffing it with soft garments before packing around it.
What if my raffia piece has an unwanted fold or crease?
Raffia is a flexible fibre and can be gently coaxed back into shape. For stubborn folds or creases, steam iron the affected area by placing a damp cloth between the raffia and a domestic iron set to maximum heat. Always use a cloth as a barrier — never apply the iron directly to the raffia.
OUR CRAFT
Are the colours shown online true to life?
We do our best to represent our pieces as accurately as possible — but as with all natural materials and natural dyes, raffia carries subtle variation in tone from piece to piece. If you have questions about a specific colour before purchasing, we're happy to help.
Where are Tanora pieces made?
Every TANORA piece is handcrafted in our own atelier in Madagascar by our dedicated team of skilled artisans. Our designs are developed in Sydney, Australia, then produced in small batches in Madagascar — always by hand, never by machine.
Who makes Tanora pieces?
Our pieces are made by a team of highly skilled Malagasy artisans, many of whom have been weaving raffia their entire lives. In 2025, TANORA opened a purpose-built atelier in Madagascar — a bright, open workspace designed entirely around the people who bring our designs to life. We are deeply committed to fair working conditions, creative recognition, and preserving the craft traditions our artisans carry.
How long does it take to make a Tanora piece?
Each piece is woven entirely by hand, which means production is intentionally slow. Depending on the complexity of the design, a single bag or hat can take days to complete.
Does Tanora produce in large quantities?
No. TANORA produces in small batches by design. This allows us to maintain the quality and handcraft of every piece, minimise waste, and ensure our artisans are never working under pressure that compromises their craft.
